I have a crippling addiction to levity, and it applies to real life as well. I have a REALLY hard time handling serious situations. If something dramatic happens, I'm either at a complete and utter loss of words, or I'm cracking a joke that others probably find ill-timed. I just can't help it. In both comics and life, it's a defense mechanism. I deal with pain by cracking wise. As such, I couldn't let this comic end with a dramatic sting (were this strip to be comedy-less, the third panel would've been the last). It just wouldn't feel right.

In any event, there you have it. Some of you can probably imagine where the comic will go from here. I hope to confound at least a few of those expectations, but still, I'll be sort of "kicking it old school" in a way, since my original Basil Flint comics all took place years after Basil's fiance had died. This is, of course, a different universe altogether, so we won't be jumping ahead years or anything. But the urge to finally return to my roots was just too strong to ignore and now was the time to pull the trigger.

While this strip almost seems to be sort of a throwaway gag for such a serious moment, believe me when I say that I flip-flopped on doing it for months. There were countless ways I could've gone here. I even started writing the next storyline with everyone alive and well, but it never felt quite right. After that, for a time, I almost killed BASIL, just to screw with people, but decided that I'd hate myself after the shock value wore off.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that for now. Feel free to hop on the forum and hate me at your leisure.
